Hyperhidrosis is a disorder characterised by intense and excessive sweating. Perspiration is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system which, when dysfunctional, i.e. when there is overstimulation of the sweat glands, leads to hyperhidrosis.
Although perspiration is a necessary process to regulate the body’s temperature, during periods of heat or physical activity, it is estimated that approximately 1.7% of the Portuguese population suffers from excessive perspiration of the hands, face, underarms and feet. Stressful situations can also cause this disorder.
This condition has major psychological impact and may, in many cases, limit social relationships, possibly leading to situations of severe isolation. Despite its prevalence, the condition is often underestimated and the treatment unknown, therefore it is essential to learn about the disease and, consequently, find the most appropriate form of prevention and treatment for each case.
At Joaquim Chaves Saúde, an experienced team is available to diagnose and treat different cases of hyperhidrosis.
